Family of patient who died injure six people in Chinese hospital rampage

Relatives armed with knives storm through Shanghai hospital and attempt to throw doctor from eighth floor window

A family armed with knives rampaged through a Shanghai hospital , wounding six people and trying to throw a doctor out of a window after a relative died there, it was reported today.

The 20 relatives of the patient identified as Liu Yonghua stormed through the Xinhua hospital's thoracic surgery department after Liu died yesterday, the Eastnet website and Dragon TV reported.

The family members tried to throw the department's deputy director from an eighth floor window but other employees stopped them, Eastnet reported.

The website said one person suffered a stab wound that came within half an inch of his heart. Police detained six people.

Dragon TV showed an injured physician being treated for his wounds in a hospital bed. The reports gave no details of Liu's illness or cause of death or why his relatives might be angry with hospital workers.

Employees who answered the phone at the hospital's public information department confirmed that the attack had taken place in the chest diseases department, but did not immediately release details.

Chinese hospitals have suffered a series of attacks by distraught patients or their relatives in recent years.

Some are triggered by demands for compensation after a death or complaints of overcharging or fake treatment.
